The answer is provided: “The pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.” How could the Father be pleased to bruise Him and see Him suffer so under the burden of sin that was put upon Him? Pleased and Satisfiedīut we read that “it pleased the Lord to bruise him” ( Isaiah 53:10). He was cut off out of the land of the living because He died to save His people from their sins. They fail to see that turning to their own way rather than God’s way means they are at enmity against God. They feel because they are a respectable citizen and a good neighbor all is well. There are those who see no need of a Savior because they are blind to their ruined condition as a transgressor of God’s law. That means we are in rebellion against God, refusing to walk in the way He has marked out for us. Because of our fallen nature we walk in our own way, not God’s way. The fact of man’s depravity is addressed here: “All we like sheep had gone astray we have turned everyone to his own way” ( Isaiah 53:6). He bore the heavy burden of sin being put upon Him but since the Lord laid on Him the iniquity of us all ( Isaiah 53:6), the sin-debt owed by His people is fully paid. Isaiah declared, “He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities the chastisement of our peace was upon Him and with His stripes we are healed” ( Isaiah 53:5). He went at God’s appointed time to accomplish the work which was given Him to do but those who crucified Him did so out of a wicked heart and were fully responsible for their actions. Jesus came to this earth to go to the cross. Here is divine sovereignty and human accountability. Peter described it this way in his message on the day of Pentecost, “Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain” ( Acts 2:23). Several times they had tried to take Him but could not, because His hour had not yet come. When He declared that He was the bread come down from heaven, many who had walked with Him for a while turned back and walked with Him no more.īut His death was not a tragedy it was a death to which He willingly submitted. While many were happy to feed on the loaves and fishes and were willing to follow Him when they thought He would set up an earthly kingdom and deliver them from their oppressors, when He spoke about God’s sovereignty in Nazareth they tried to kill Him. So although there were times that great crowds followed Him, ultimately the prophecy was fulfilled and Jesus was “despised and rejected of men” ( Isaiah 53:3). What a blessing to hear the perfect teacher present a perfect lesson! What a privilege to see the Son of God heal the sick and raise the dead! Yet the majority of those who claimed to believe the message of the Old Testament prophets had a distorted view of what they wrote. The perfect God-man would perform great miracles, deliver powerful messages, and reach out in mercy to fallen sinners. The very One by whom the world was made would walk on the earth He had created. What an amazing event! God was coming to earth. The prophet gives us a vivid picture of what would transpire when the Savior came. In Isaiah 53 of his prophecy, Isaiah writes about the humiliation, the suffering and the death of Jesus Christ - and also informs us that He was not disappointed or defeated but was satisfied because He accomplished the work He came to do. A man is told that his partner was killed in a ferry explosion. A man describes murdering a man and a woman. ► A man yells at several people and slams a chair into a monitor screen. ► We see hurricane damage and houses in ruins. Armed police storm into a house with guns drawn, but they find no one. A man with a gun approaches a woman, the man shoots a police officer repeatedly, and then many men shoot at each other. ► A man pulls a gun on a man, who shoots him, and he falls to the ground (he's not dead). A man shoots at an ambulance that crashes into a shack the man in the ambulance is shot but is not killed (we see a bloody bullet hole in his shoulder), tanks of gas are shot and there is a larger explosion. ► A ferryboat explodes, throwing many passengers in flames through the air (we see bodies floating in the water and survivors with bloody wounds and burned flesh). A man walks through an empty house and finds blood on a sink, towels and the floor, and finds many bloody bandages in a garbage can. A man cleans the blood from a gunshot wound in his shoulder (we see blood on gauze and towels). We see many body bags lined up on a pier and dead bodies with bloody wounds. An alligator thrashes in the water and a human hand floats near it. ► We see a female dead body on an autopsy table with bloody wounds and burned flesh and the fingers of one hand had been cut off (we are told that the woman was tortured). ► A man is pinned between two cars on a ferryboat, he shoots his gun at the person driving one of the cars, and he is in turn shot in the head then one car is driven off the ferry and crashes into water where two people inside struggle to get out (one does not manage to get out). ► We see a woman bound and in a chair, with a bag over her head, and a man pours gasoline on her and prepares to set her on fire she then scratches his face, and he hits her hard and moves toward her with shears to cut her fingers off (we do not see the fingers being cut off). VIOLENCE/GORE 7 - A man is shot in the head, gasoline is poured over him and he is set on fire (we see the shot and see the charred ground after the fact). The marching principle is recognized in the same ways as accrual or cash. These goods have the cost of goods sold in the amount of $40,000.īased on the Matching Principle, the cost of goods sold amount $40,000 have to be recorded in December 2016, same as revenue of $70,000 recognized. The following are the examples of the Matching Principle: Example 1:Īssume we have sold the goods to our customers amount $70,000 for the month of December 2016. Matching principle: Matching between expenses and revenues Examples of Matching Principle: In December 2016, the salesman could earn 2,000$, but the commission payment will be payable in January of the following year. The commission is provided only when sales transactions are made. 5% of the sales commission will be provided to the salesman. The reduction of the inventories corresponding to revenues is called the cost of goods sold.īased on the Matching principle, the Cost of Goods Sold should record the period in which the revenues are earned.Īnother example is that the salesman in your company could earn some commission due to their sales performance. But, what do we mean by related?įor example, when we sell the goods to our customers, the revenue increases and decreases the inventories. The related expenses here refer to the expenses that occur in correlation with the revenues. One is revenue, and another is related to expenses. This principle concerns the recognition of two essential elements. The users who use that financial information as the reference for making the decision will become the victim. If the revenue or expenses are recorded inconsistently, then there will be over or under income or expenses. This concept tries to ensure that there are no over or under revenue or expenses records in the financial statements. The expenses correlated with revenues should be recognized in the same period in the financial statements. In the case of prepaid rent, for instance, the cost of rent for the period would be deducted from the Prepaid Rent account. The matching principle is one of the accounting principles that require, as its name, the matching between revenues and their related expenses. As a prepaid expense is used, an adjusting entry is made to update the value of the asset. Prepaid expenses, such as employee wages or subcontractor fees paid out or promised, are not recognized as expenses they are considered assets because they will provide probable future benefits. Lastly, if no connection with revenues can be established, costs are recognized immediately as expenses (e.g., general administrative and research and development costs). Prepaid expenses are not recognized as expenses, but as assets until one of the qualifying conditions is met resulting in a recognition as expenses. Conversely, cash basis accounting calls for the recognition of an expense when the cash is paid, regardless of when the expense was actually incurred. If no cause-and-effect relationship exists (e.g., a sale is impossible), costs are recognized as expenses in the accounting period they expired: i.e., when have been used up or consumed (e.g., of spoiled, dated, or substandard goods, or not demanded services). By recognizing costs in the period they are incurred, a business can see how much money was spent to generate revenue, reducing "noise" from timing mismatch between when costs are incurred and when revenue is realized. And the matching principle instructs that an expense should be reported in the same period in which the corresponding revenue is earned, and is associated with accrual accounting. In accrual accounting, the revenue recognition principle states that revenues should be recorded during the period in which they are earned, regardless of when the transfer of cash occurs. Wikipedia Rate this definition: 0.0 / 0 votes The feeling of alienation overcomes the protagonist of the poem she feels detached from reality and clings to her family clothing and familiar scenes of her past in an attempt to come to terms with her present life, a reflection for the most part of her lonely childhood. Paradoxically, her care and diligence seem to be unnoticed her housework is constantly taken for granted by her family, who apparently only establish communication with the narrator to scold and warn her of the possible consequences of getting distracted from her daily routine. The narrator highlights the importance of her task, her responsibility to her family, who are expecting her contribution to the domestic tasks, so that they can wear freshly ironed clothes every morning. Thus, the narrative voice does not complain about the absence of love in her family but their lack of time to express it, a working routine that makes her feel abandoned and alienated from the other members of the family. The second stanza recalls memories of an always busy mother, doing strenuous domestic work that occupies a precious time her daughter claims as hers. The memory of this narrator, undoubtedly Alvarez’s alter ego, moves to the fore images of her father’s back “cramped and worried with work,” of “the collapsed arms” waiting to be hugged by his loved ones in the first stanza or part of the poem. The clothes she irons still carry the imprint of overworked bodies, yelling for a long night’s rest and showing the history of a long life of effort and hard labor. The domestic scene is transformed into a time of longing and reflection upon the history written on the family’s bodies. She presses the wrinkles of her parents’ clothing, trying to liberate them from their problems, pains, and conflicts while she maps her childhood in a household too busy for love. These sketches deal exactly with doing the family housework: she sweeps, dusts, makes the beds, does laundry, and, in this story, irons the laundry of her family both literally and symbolically. The first part of Homecoming, entitled “Housekeeping,” to which “Ironing Their Clothes” belongs, is composed of sketches. Alvarez creates an alter ego to review her childhood, contemplating it from the distance that age provides. The collection is narrated by an adult female voice trying to recompose scenes from her childhood and coming to terms with current events in her present life. This poem-a short story in prose-first appeared in an issue of the journal 13th Moon, devoted to American women’s writing. “Ironing Their Clothes” belongs to Homecoming, the first poetry collection published by Julia Alvarez, a collection of narrative poems that focus on domestic life, where the author uses family images to reconstruct her family’s past. In 2013, she received the National Medal of Arts from President Obama.Analysis of Julia Alvarez’s Ironing Their Clothes Ten years later, the family was forced to flee to the United States because of her father’s involvement in a plot to overthrow the dictator, Trujillo.Īlvarez has written novels ( How the García Girls Lost Their Accents, In the Time of the Butterflies, ¡Yo!, In the Name of Salomé, Saving the World, Afterlife), collections of poems ( Homecoming, The Other Side/ El Otro Lado, The Woman I Kept to Myself), nonfiction ( Something to Declare, Once Upon A Quinceañera, and A Wedding in Haiti), and numerous books for young readers (including the Tía Lola Stories series, Before We Were Free, finding miracles, Return to Sender and Where Do They Go?).Īlvarez’s awards include the Pura Belpré and Américas Awards for her books for young readers, the Hispanic Heritage Award, and the F. The same government officials who’d appointed him Captain America in the first place faked his death, brainwashed him into forgetting that his parents were dead, and made him into the U.S. Eventually he resigned as Captain America so that Steve could come back, but things just got worse. The idea was that he seemed easier to browbeat into doing what they wanted than Steve “I could do this all day” Rogers, but Walker’s tenure as Cap was ignominious and tragic.Īfter his secret identity was revealed on live television, far-right terrorists assassinated his parents, which lead him into a mental breakdown in which he killed or maimed everyone associated with his outing and their murders. Right around then, Steve Rogers quit being Captain America in a huff ( which he does all the time), and just like in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the US Government appointed John Walker to be the new Captain America. One downpayment on a back-alley superpowers program later, he got a job as the corporate-backed superhero the Super-Patriot, and spent much of his time arguing that (in the political environment of the mid-80s) he was a better representative of American values than Captain America. John Walker started out as an average American bro who grew up idolizing his veteran brother, but his own military service failed to give him the feeling of being a hero that he truly wanted. Agent? Image: Mark Gruenwald, Kieron Dwyer/Marvel Comics And Russell’s take on the character could certainly assume that role, too. In the comics, Marvel fans know Walker as U.S. Halfway through the 40-minute episode, he’s trying to get Sam and Bucky to fall into line. As established in the MCU, he was an actual captain in the army, he seems to possess top attributes in strength and intelligence (if not truly superheroic ones), and in the hands of actor Wyatt Russell, he’s more than a little smarmy. That man, for the United States government, is John Walker. We need someone to inspire us again, someone who can be a symbol for all of us.” We need a real person who embodies America’s greatest values. “While we love heroes who put their lives on the line to defend Earth,” says the announcer, “we also need a hero to defend this country. The guy is even wielding Steve Rogers’ shield, mere days after Sam gave a speech at the thing’s new Smithsonian exhibit. In the last scene of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premiere, Sam Wilson and his sister Sarah watch as a US government official reveals a new Captain America. And if the comics are any indication - and with the remix-ready Marvel, they usually are - it could be mean trouble for Sam and Bucky. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier episode 2 digs a little deeper into the new hero’s backstory. But the premiere of the Disney Plus series ended with an important introduction: one John Walker aka the new Captain America. The first episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier took its time reminding us of all the things that have happened to Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes recently - a Civil War, a five-year nap, Captain America’s retirement, etc. Killing Zombies will also give Juliet star power, and when she fills up a meter you can execute a rainbow attack for a bit of extra cheertastic spirit, it's ridiculous. Later on you'll also pick up a chainsaw attachment that turns it into a gun, with bullets that crop up from time to time when you need them most, and my favourite was more powerful version of the gun called the "nick popper" which is a one-off attack you can gamble for, allowing you to shoot Nick's head at zombies from a rainbow funnel. Not to mention your rank at the end of each level. Getting a hit in to break a charge or working out which moves will take-out the heavy zombies with just one move is really fun, and makes the sore fingers you get from slamming those buttons really worthwhile. You'll often be faced with zombies strapped with explosives, policeman zombies with guns, zombies that fly and some will charge you as well. There's a pretty decent variety of zombie enemies, too. If you don't time your attacks correctly combos can be frequently interrupted by heavy-hitting zombie attacks. I know but I felt like that stilted the action a little bit and does make things a bit button-mashy. Well it is a heavy weapon to use though, it's got some weight behind it. I found the chainsaw was a bit slow though Hex, just in the action of it. And the more combos you use, the more medals zombies will give up allowing you to buy even more. I thought these looked really great, chaining together your cheerleading attacks with low spins, thrusts and windmill moves really make a mess of the fray. Dead zombies will give up medals, and so will saving students in danger, and you'll use these to unlock more complex and heavier, hitting combos. Juliet's focus is on tearing her way through as many zombies as possible, using a combination of kicks, flips, cheers and pom-pom bashes, along with some hefty and acrobatic swings of her chainsaw. UNLESS, Juliet performs a ritual magic spell taught to her by her father that will preserve Nick's decapitated head, that she then chooses to wear as a belt accessory while she fights. Upon failing to make it to her boyfriend in time, Juliet watches as Nick is bitten by a zombie and realizes that there is no hope for him to survive. And in true Suda style, the game is weird. And Juliet, ditsy and scantily clad as she is, still manages to kick some serious butt in the process, with goofy jokes at every turn. Particularly after something like Shadows of the Damned which was really unsavoury. Yeah, it's crass, but it's actually quite funny at times. And while I shudder to think that girls everywhere could be jumping up to cosplay as Juliet at conventions instead of Femshep, this game really did make me laugh. I mean, Juliet Starling really is everything that's wrong with the way women are portrayed in gaming. I have to say, when I picked up this game, I really thought I'd hate it. It's the kind of crass, zany humour we've come to expect from SUDA51, centred around a combo-heavy brawler with stars-a-plenty and rainbows! And of course, chomping on a lollipop whenever she needs a pick-me up. Lollipop Chainsaw is the latest wacky offering from the mind of SUDA51 and his dev team Grasshopper Manufacture, which sees our perky protagonist leaping and cheering her way through zombie hordes all while wielding a deadly chainsaw. Luckily for Juliet, she has a well-kept secret, zombie massacre is what she does best. And to top it all off her high school has been completely overrun by zombies. Her cheerleading squad failed to win nationals for the third year in a row, she's late to meet her boyfriend Nick, who is like TOTALLY dreamy. So be prepared for a long process that can take 5 years or more to completely eradicate the weed. You need to give it a year to see the improvements.Īnd you might still find the occasional horsetail plant growing. Mixing in some compost can also help to prepare the soil for your plants to grow.Īlthough changing the soil conditions will encourage horsetail to disappear naturally, don’t expect it to happen over night. Wait 2 weeks after adding the lime before you add fertilizer to the soil. This increases the pH of the soil away from the acidic conditions that horsetail prefers.īut horsetail can still grow in alkaline conditions, so this won’t be enough on its own. Apply Dolomite LimeĪdd the lime to the soil as per the instructions on the packet. If the drainage problems are severe enough this may involve laying a drainpipe or digging a perimeter ditch to siphon away the water. And make sure that heavy rain drains easily from the area. Improve Drainageįill in any depressed and boggy areas that are holding water. So the best way to control it in the long term is simple:Ĭhange the soil conditions away from the ones it prefers to something more suitable for the healthy growth of desirable plants. Horsetail thrives in wet soil that’s low in oxygen, nutrients, and pH (acidic). Making it difficult to spray on grass lawns or around desirable plants. So it will kill any plants it comes into contact with. And if applied regularly over a long enough period it can cause it to die.Īs useful as it is, using vinegar has a drawback: However, destroying the growth above ground with repeated applications can weaken the plant. This means it can destroy the parts of the plant it touches. Similar to chemical weedkiller, your results will be better if you first damage the plant by cutting the stems or crushing the leaves. Instead, you need to get high-strength vinegar with an acetic acid concentration of around 20-30%. But the normal table variety isn’t strong enough to do the job. Vinegar is good at killing horsetail above the ground. But it will prevent the growth of new shoots. It won’t kill the horsetail plants that are already growing. Using A Pre-Emergent HerbicideĪ good way to control the growth of horsetail is to use the pre-emergent herbicide Casoron. Don’t dispose of them in landfill, by dumping them in the countryside, or by adding them to your compost pile. Burn them or allow them to rot in a bin liner. Make sure you dispose of any parts you cut away carefully. But it may take a number of tries before you kill the plant roots as well, preventing it from regrowing. This approach is very effective at killing horsetail above the ground, and you’ll notice results after your first application. Then spray or paint the weed killer on to the damaged areas so it can get inside the plant. To use weed killer effectively, you first need to cut the weeds back or crush the stems and leaves. Southern Ag Crossbow Specialty Herbicide On Amazon So the best weed killer for horsetail is Crossbow. But a better choice are products containing the herbicides 2,4-D and triclopyr. Weed killers containing glyphosate can do the job, such as RoundUp. This kills the horsetail from the inside all the way down to the root. To get the best results you should use a post-emergent systemic weed killer. But if you use them in the right way it’s possible to control the plant.Ĭhoosing the right product is crucial. Horsetail ( Equisetum arvense) has a hard waxy cuticle that makes it difficult to kill with herbicides. They will provide specific guidelines necessary to prevent groundwater and other types of harmful contamination. Is it Horsetail or Marestail? 8 ways To Kill Horsetail Weeds Chemical Weed Killer If there are any questions or concerns as to if this pesticide is being stored or disposed of properly, contact the Environmental Protection Agency. An added benefit to this weed killer is that it can be applied when weeds are dormant. These plants include, but are not limited to the following:Ĭrossbow herbicide is easy to use, and can be applied with most hand-held sprayers or by using a spraying attachment on a tractor. Some weeds are removed for cosmetic reasons, while others wreak havoc on properties that are meant to stay clear, like golf courses and other manicured grounds.
